What is Delta-v?
The Basics
Delta-v, or Δv, is a measure of the impulse per unit of spacecraft mass.
It is a technical way to say "difference in velocity." You can commonly find this quantity in physics, and it has a particular importance in spacecraft flight dynamics. When reconstructing accidents, Delta-V is a critical piece of the puzzle. Delta-V, the long-standing metric of crash severity, is simply defined as the total change in velocity.
How is Delta-v Used?
In general physics, delta-v is a change in velocity.
The Greek uppercase letter Δ (delta) is the standard mathematical symbol to represent change in some quantity. Ultimately, we use delta-v to determine the amount of fuel needed to change the trajectory to a desired one using impulse thrusts (sudden change in velocity).
